England's football governing body has dispatched scouts to the America this week to inspect potential bases for the forthcoming global finals, amid growing worries that their first-choice site could be taken by the Netherlands.
Draw Complications Change Plans
Head coach Thomas Tuchel had earlier cleared an FA plan for England to set up camp in Kansas following a pre-tournament training period in Fort Lauderdale. Yet, following last week's group stage draw, there are now fears that the Netherlands, who have their group stage matches in Kansas, will be awarded first refusal on the chosen facility at Sporting Kansas City—a high-performance centre used by US Soccer.
The world governing body allocates training camps according to geographic location and FIFA rankings if there is a dispute, with the draw possibly pitting the FA in competition with the Netherlands and Argentina for bases in the tournament's central region.
Considering Other Sites
Given England's group fixtures set to take place in Dallas, Boston, and New Jersey, the FA is now understood to be looking at alternative options on the eastern seaboard. The association began its search for training bases at the start of the year, with Tuchel and technical director John McDermott touring possible sites during the Club World Cup last summer.
In spite of this advanced preparation, there was always an understanding that the official tournament draw could drastically change their logistical arrangements.
Knockout Stage Logistics Plans
England have the eighth most demanding group stage draw in terms of travel. Topping Group L would put England on course for a last-32 game in Atlanta, then a possible last-16 tie in Mexico City.
